Working hand in hand with the Links page this list is aimed more squarely at the aspiring writer. I'm always happy to receive suggestions to add to the
list (latest at the top).
- Well worth having a look at Creative
Screenwriting magazine. I have just subscribed.
- Network online, we all know the power of TWITTER,
give it go, I have, very addictive: KrisTheScript
On Twitter.
- Buy Syd Field - Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting - in fact anything by Syd Field. All writers read this stuff, it's important. There are other books out there like Robert McKee - Story
and Save
The Cat by Blake Snyder - many consider these essential too.
- Visit SimplyScripts.com join, read, share and enjoy.
Great forum too!
- Download scripts and read them, read them all the time. IMSDB.com and DailyScript.com are 2 to get you going.
- Buy Final Draft or Movie Magic screenwriting software - they are industry standard and there to make your life easier... you write, they format.
- Start with shorts and move to features when you feel confident enough or have a good idea.
- Protect your ideas.
- If you can't write a 3-act structure, give it up. Once in a blue moon something a little different comes along but why make it harder for yourself if you want to get noticed. Write something different when you have mastered the basics...call it a vanity project.
- Write because you enjoy it, I've not received any money at all so far and I don't care. I love to write.
- Get yourself down to the Cheltenham Screenwriters Festival and network.
- Subscribe to the excellent Script magazine, an excellent read, good advice and well worth the money.
- Universal film executive Franklin Leonard's THE BLACK LIST 2008 was compiled from the suggestions of over 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favourite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2008 and will not be released in theatres during this calendar year. Read it to pick up on trends.
